Product Description
The long awaited and highly anticipated 500mW output 802.11n wireless USB adapter from Alfa IS HERE. Alfa is now compatible with the 802.11n draft 3.0 standard. Just like the Alfa G version, this model has 500mW max output power. But it also features a dual band radio which provides it with 802.11a and 802.11n connectivity. 802.11n is the latest standard in wireless networking technology, providing top speeds of 300 mbps, and ranges up to six times better than standard 802.11g connections.Tthe Alfa AWUS050NH works with all four of the wireless standards, including the most recent, 802.11n. It also works with Windows, Mac, and Linux (at this time we do not support Mac and Linux installs of this product but can provide driver and instruction links for download for these operating systems, note that Mac use requires OS 10.4 or 10.5 and Linux use requires Kernel 2.6 or later). We know many users will be wondering if this is exactly the same as the popular Alfa AWUS036H adapter from Alfa, the 802.11g model with 500mw of output power, only with added N capabilities. While there are many similarities, they are some differences. The key difference is that the AWUS036H model used a Realtek chipset, and Realtek does not yet make a chipset that supports 802.11n functionality. So Alfa went with a very good chip from Ralink. So the receive sensitivity is virtually identical between the two. When using an 802.11n router though, you will get a tremendous benefit from using this 802.11n Alfa model. When used with an 802.11n standard router, you can experience up to 300 mbps speed and up to 6X the range vs. standard G connectivity. Please note that 300 mbps is a maximum speed, your connectivity will likely be lower depending on the distance between the adapter and router, and obstacles and interference in the area. Please note that if you have a B/G Router than you are better off purchasing ASIN: B000QYGNKQSimilar Products

There seems to be a few of these boosters on Amazon & eBay. All of them look the same but have various logos (GSky, ALFA, Wardriving). I was aiming for the one that had the most positive reviews. This seems to be the Wardriving one, however I wanted N capabilities because I also ordered the super pricey NETGEAR RangeMax Dual Band Wireless-N Router WNDR3300 Wireless router and I was hoping to make use of the RangeMax Dual Band promised 300 MBps connection. So I ended up getting this ALFA kit which had a moderate amount positive reviews (I only now found out that they are two ALFA kits and the one with the super long extender Antenna was the one that got better reviews, and the one here which I got that has the shorter antenna).
This ALFA kit replaces an out-of-production superb 100 MBps US Robotics Industrial Designed USB-2.0 WiFi Antenna that mysteriously and suddenly died a few weeks ago. The kit was easy to install on my DELL XPS 200 which sits on the second floor in my parent's home and connects to the soon to be replaced Netgear RangeMax Wireless Access Point 802.11b/g with Smart MIMO two floors below in the basement.
The ALFA booster picked up the signal in the basement quickly and with no trouble at the 80% to %90 range (My previous US Robotics did as well if not slightly better). The ALFA booster was sensitive to where I placed it around the DELL XPS. In other words, I took a few minutes to find a sweet spot that gave the best signal range. I wasn't expecting that from this booster. Since the signal was coming a long way from the basement why would moving the booster a few inches to the left or right add or subtract detection range?
At any rate I was happy with it until today when I picked up a much cheaper, slimmer REALTEK USB-2.0 Booster Antenna (cost me $10) for improving the range on my IBM T60 notebook, but I first decided to install it on the DELL XPS 200 to compare with the pricier and beefier ALFA booster. To my surprise the REALTEK needed no sweet spot and drew a steady 90% plus range from the source. That is not saying the ALFA kit is bad, it's more saying it is not great.
This ALFA works for what it does and what I paid for it ($40)

This item is not the best on the market. Yes the item is small which is nice but the sucksion cup that comes with it doesn't hold and the antenna strength is very week. I don't know what wireless adapter is the best on the marker I just know that this isn't it. I am currently in a location where I can't just use internet everywhere I go but there is wifi around my dorms. I wanted to get wifi in my room by using a antenna ( like so many others do around me). When I got the adapter I hooked it up to my laptop and placed the antenna out side my dorm room window where it can receive the wifi signal. I only got 1 bar out of 5, so I kept trying different adjustments and hieghts and locations. I even turned off my internal anetenna of my laptop. Nothing seemed to make the signal better. Then I decided to try going out side and caparing the antenna to my wireless antenna. When I went out side I got 4 out of 5 bars with my regular laptop and with the antennal working by it self I sometimes got 3 out of 5 but it seemed to work with 2 most of the time. Not what I expected. So for now I ordered an antenna that will attach to this adapter and extend mt reach to see if that will help. But really, this item is not worth the price. Keep looking around, you can find better.

I used an Alfa b/g network adapter (USB 500mW WiFI Adapter) with good success on my wireless-n router 300 feet away and decided to try this new Alfa N, though more expensive. Although the network signal strength shows less, data transfer is actually better than the Alfa b/g version, so I'm happy. Don't waste money on the bigger antenna, though, since the little one works just as good. Only negative is the tiny cd with drivers that comes with it, but which can fall through some cd drives, so I copied it to a standard cd which will work anywhere.
This product works much better than the Wi-Fire that I used before but which has buggy driver software, a flimsy mount, and worked only half as well while costing almost twice as much! Alfa has the best and cheapest wireless adapters I've found so far. Or can someone suggest something even better?

Alpha is not worth $62.98 delivered!
10 dBm less signal from "Alpha Wireless-N 500mW 802.11n" VS "USB Wifi LAN Wireless G Adapter
(RTL8187 chipset)". Both work with BackTrack 3.
Used same 2.4GHz 24dBi Outdoor Grid Dish Antenna from amazon($48.69) and NetStumbler in all tests.
The G unit can be found at netsuper-outlet on ebay for under $20.00 delivered. N units now available @ $25.00.
USB Wireless-G WiFi LAN Adapter with Antenna(amazon $24.00) untested but similar.
TP-LINK TL-WN422G 54Mbps 802.11g Wireless LAN USB 2.0 Adapter(amazon $24.21) is also
10 dBm less signal as the G unit and not recognized by BackTrack 3.
Alpha has N draft download rate and it runs at a low temperature. 10 dBm less signal is a lot when you need it. This unit is recognized by airowizard, netwitness, and wireshark. Will go into monitor mode with BackTrack 3. It will not go in to promiscuous mode in wireshark. Uses Ralink chipset and rt25oo driver.

I bought this product to use it in my building when I am at the pool, because I couldn't access my own apartment's signal with my laptop's built-in wifi antenna. My apartment is on a 14th floor.
The antenna works perfectly, I can now access my internet from the pool, and the portable device that you put on your laptop cover is a great plus.
If I had a list of 6 possible wifi accesses before with the built-in antenna, y now have about 20 with the Alfa antenna. Great product; I totally recommend it.
