"Very Dependable and Firmware Flashable" 2009-12-15
    By Mike (American Soil)
I had my first WRT54GS for nearly 6 years before a lightning surge took it out. I had also flashed the firmware to DDWRT and boosted its wireless output 3x to 70w and added high-gain anttennea. This is a great performer and I replaced my burnt router with this same make and model. I love it, and since I have mostly "G" equipment I didn't feel the need to move to "N" standards. This more than covers my house and out-buildings with a strong signal.

     "Wireless is not wireless" 2009-12-06
By General Bren (San Pedro, CA, USA)
I've used this router over several years. It's a very good router and I've used it with Sony Vaio, Compaq, and HP computers running up to Windows XP systems. It works great when it does work. The software and set up is a bit complicated and seems you have to be on the Internet to get it to install correctly. I bought the router because we have a desktop, laptop, and xbox tied to a DSL line. I was able to create a LAN system and "talked" between the laptop and desktop with ease. I even configured my printer into this whole shibang. What perturbed me was when I upgraded to a new HP desktop running Vista. Vista didn't want to recognized any of the software from Linksys. It created a network with my laptop but I wanted the whole thing to be on a wired network. This router provides this option and I thought I had been running a wired system. But I was checking a friends laptop with wireless abilities and there I was, on the laptop. I created a system that was supposed to be wired and here I'm putting my business all out there for everyone to use. Needless to say, it's disconnected and tucked away where it won't bother me anymore. Long story short, it works ok but be sure to check it for security issues after you install it. If you choose the wired option, get another laptop to make sure you're wired (and I mean without alcohol). I know I turned off the wireless option but this router had other plans.

By S. Stallings (Lillian, AL, USA)
I had been using a NetGear adapter on my desktop and it was very slow. I could get no satisfaction from the support people. I got a Linksys and am much happier with the response time.

       "Linksys wireless adapter" 2008-01-19
      By S. Mathis (Montana)
I bought this because my computer takes an express card and they are fairly expensive. Not wanting to spend that much I went with the USP wireless adapter. It seems awkward and not as safe to have it hanging off the edge of the computer, but overall I am happy with it. Install is very easy with the included CD, worked first time out. I do have periodic problems with losing the wireless connection with the router and have not been able to figure out why, not sure if it is the computer, router or adapter causing the problem.

"Works fine and lasts a long time" 2008-01-16
By Stephanie Sullivan (Boston, MA USA)
This adapter was a replacement for an old 802.11b one that only supported WEP security. It was also linksys. The old unit was removed, software uninstalled. The new adapter software was installed, the adapter plugged in, WPA security key entered and away it went. Just that easy and it's really compact. Very nice.

        Amazon.com Product Description

The Linksys Wireless-G broadband router combines the flexibility of a home network with the simplicity of good design. You can directly connect up to four PCs (or daisy-chain as many hubs as you like) and allow them all to share a DSL connection or cable modem. The built-in Ethernet ports support up to four devices, while the wireless access point handles both Wireless-G and Wireless-B accessories; secure encryption protects your privacy. These functions are all set up through a browser-based Web utility that will have you up and running quickly.
        Easy Hardware Connections
Four Ethernet ports and two telephone jacks are readily accessible.
The unit also features two standard phone jacks that connect any ordinary telephone or fax to AT&T CallVantage sm Service (requires broadband via DSL or cable modem). Each jack operates independently and can support two different phone numbers (where available; requires service activation).

AT&T CallVantage Service is a voice over Internet protocol (VoIP) telephone service that utilizes the latest in Internet technology to deliver features that are beyond the means of traditional phone companies. With VoIP, calls are transmitted over the Internet, allowing you to communicate nationwide for a single monthly fee. You pay additional charges only for international calls, which are billed at competitive prices. (AT&T CallVantage service treats calls to Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, and Canada as domestic calls.)

In addition to standard features you expect from your traditional phone company, such as caller ID, call waiting, three-way calling, and call forwarding, AT&T CallVantage Service provides a number of extras made possible only through use of Internet protocol technology. You can have voice mail forwarded to your e-mail inbox as an attachment and then forward that attachment to relevant third parties. You can take your home area code with you when you travel, so your family or work can reach you without paying long-distance rates. And, with an elaborate variation of call forwarding known as "Locate Me," you can maintain a list of places you'll be visiting: When you're out and about, the service will ring each place in sequence (or all at once) until it finds you.

Sign up for AT&T CallVantage Service and you're automatically given a secure, private, Personal Call Manager Web site. With it, you have complete control of all your features. At a glance, you can check your voice mail or instantly change any of your settings. This truly sets AT&T CallVantage Service apart from any other home phone service.

Accessible either by phone or the Internet, the Phone Feature Manager supplies a phone directory that stores up to 250 numbers and logs every incoming and outgoing call for 60 days. A reverse lookup directory lets you access the name and address information of an incoming caller, while the Add to Phone Book feature lets you move any number from your call log to your phone book with the touch of a single button. Display and Dial lets you easily call any number selected from either your call log or phone book, and you can create up to nine speed dial entries for your most frequently dialed numbers. With all the possibilities that AT&T CallVantage Service offers, you can organize your communications like never before.

        What's in the Box

Wireless networks are rapidly becoming more popular and coming down in price. Since they don't require cables, you can use the devices anywhere in an office or home, even out on the patio. There's no need to roll out an Ethernet network cable to each room of a house; you can network anywhere--without wires. Outside the home, wireless networking is available in hotspots at coffee shops, businesses, and airports--great when you're on the road and need to get some work done. For convenience, wireless networking is the answer.

What Wireless Standard Is Right for Me?
Now that you've decided to create a wireless network, the next step is to figure out which wireless standard to use.

Basically, a standard is a set of specifications for a device. All devices that follow a specific standard share operating characteristics, such as the radio frequency used and maximum data transfer speed.

For wireless networking, there are three standards to choose from at this time:

        • 802.11b
        • 802.11a
        • 802.11g

To learn about the differences between the standards and select the right one for your network, click here for an easy-to-understand chart.

"I hate att dsl internet" 2007-09-23
        By mommyofchristopher (United States)
Every time I come to my computer, I have no connection. I called att and they said it was my computer, but when I talked to other people in my area, they said they had the same problem. I would not recommend att internet. It's awful. I would not recommend comcast, either. Comcast workers are mean and nasty. If anyone knows of a good reliable internet, please let me know.

        By R. Sadler (Indianapolis, IN)
Received the product on time. Fairly easy plug and play, however when I connected with AT&T CallVantage for the initial setup of the account the AT&T system thought I had the standard telephone adaptor and tried to download the wrong data. I called the AT&T help line and the service tech was great and easily corrected the problem. I have been very happy with both the router and the AT&T CallVantage service.

         "Be VERY afraid" 2007-04-19
        By WAF (NY)
There is nothing to this device that would even earn it one star, but no stars is not an option.

I have now had four of these - provided by AT&T - over the past 15 months. The sad fact is that they just don't work and AT&T has stopped supporting this unit. The first problem seems to have been the faulty power supply that early units were shipped with. Later problems are the firmware or some such which At&T always seems to be fiddling with remotely. My fourth unit lasted less than 90 days.

When it is working, this is a standard Linksys wireless router, a generally dependable device, coupled with a phone-thing that provides miserable sound quality.

The good news is that you can't get these anymore. The even better news would be if you (unlike me) were smart enough to avoid AT&T Callvantage together. But that's a whole different story . . .

Good product, working fine. A little trouble "unlocking" the product to work with other VoIP provided (other then ATT), but it worked.

"Excellent Router...Up and running in less than 30 Minutes" 2006-10-07
        By G. Verstrate (PPines, FL)
Purchased this product seperatly from my ATT callvantage service. I installed a wireless card and then the wireless router. The whole process took less than 30min and the internet was up and running. Had slight problem with phone because ATT had set up and shipped their TA adapater(which i did not want) but this was resolved with a ten minute phone call to ATT's 24 hour tech support. All in all this has been a very stable product and I have had no problems with the phone or internet since installing it a month ago. Phone calls are crystal clear and my internet speeds are excellent.

"Adapter does NOT work with Mac OS X" 2009-12-29
By Larsen Turningstone (Atlanta, GA United States)
I purchased this product solely because of its compatibility with Mac OS X, as my internal wireless card is "unpredictable" at best. However, I couldn't figure out which driver to use to install the Panda USB because the Mini CD that ships with the package is not readable by the internal CD/DVD drive found in my MacBookPro -- the drive doesn't have a retractable tray to which the mini disk can be coupled. Thus began my aggravations with the purchase of this adapter. The website for this product at [...] has the drivers for Mac, Linux, and Windows but no instructions to follow for installation. That's helpful. I was glad to download the driver over a 15k link if I could only tell what driver number applies to my wireless device. There is not a mention of the manufacturers model number anywhere on the adapter, on the packaging, or in the brief brochure that is included in the retail box. Once I am able to figure out that this card is RT3070 and download the software, the device remains unusable. The Ralink wireless manager software reports that the card is connected to my network, yet my ISR/access point does not show an association, and consequently an IP address isn't assigned to the device. However, there is no convincing the proprietary wi-fi manager that the adapter isn't actually associated. Lovely. Thinking that I may be able to use it on the Linux OS that dual boots on my laptop, I load up Fedora 11 and download the Linux driver from the RaLink website. Too bad that I cannot figure out how to get the installation going now that I have the driver. I don't know if it is not compatible with my distro or what. And where are the customers supposed to get the supposed one year technical support? The link from the manufacturers website immediately prompts the end user for username and password credentials without providing a link for one to use to create an account. I give up -- its a loss and a total waste of money. Had I known about the shoddy support and lack of documentation I would not have taken a chance on this product, let alone its inability to function in the Mac OS X environment. Caveat Emptor.

The Alfa USB wireless adapter works very well in both Windows and Linux. Using the internal wireless adapter in my Asus 1000HA netbook, I could only detect a few networks in my neighborhood. After attaching this adapter, I was able to detect 15+ networks.

The Alfa adapter works great with Backtrack, as I'm sure you've read from various forums. The card allows for monitor mode, packet injection, etc. If you're looking for a card for wireless pen-testing, then this is the one for you. You will not be disappointed.

              1 word: EPIC

This baby is just POWERFUL. Don't expect MILES of range.

But if you get FAINT (1 bar) signals, they will be 3-4 bars with this.

I used to get 3-5 hotspots at my local Starbucks/Barnes & Noble Cafe where only 1 was useable.

Now I can get Staples Hotspot @ 3 bars 250 feet away through 5 other stores and Buffalo Wild Wings wifi @ 2 bars 400 feet away (subscription require, I'm just quoting for the range)

The range and power is unbelievable, and it doesn't seem to impact battery life at all!

If you use this with Kismac for war driving or whatever make sure NOT to install the drivers.

Just connect it and use the "Ralink rtl8187" drivers in Kismac.

I get better reception and see more hotspots in Kismac but I can't seem to connect...

Got this as a birthday present. We live in a condo downtown. Tons of free wifi available, just needed something like this to grab it.

Pulled it out of the box, used the mini-CD install disc; restarted the desktop; and picked up 16 networks right away (signal strength from 80%-50% on all).

EASE OF USE: Piece of cake, nothing to screw up with the install.

LOCATION: This is the only tricky part, I notice that the closer I move it to the window, even just a few inches, and the signal dramatically improves (10-20%). Eventually I'll buy a 25' USB cable and put in the window for optimum signal. Not needed now, but someday.

SMALL ANTENNAE vs LARGE: Haven't tried the small one yet and don't see the need to. The large one is working fine. I think some reviewers are getting interference because the larger antennae is more sensitive. Smaller one might work better if interference is an issue.

SPEED: Around 1-5 mbps with current placement, that will jump the closer I move it to the window.

I bought this about 5 months ago. I work in a motel, where the office is located below the actual rooms on a hill above and behind (id say 50-60 yards). There is wireless up there for the rooms but not down here. I've tried about 5 different laptops (and 2 adapters in mine), and the best we manage is to see an inconsistent list of the networks up there. Can't connect to any. Most of the problem i think is line of sight or interference, because if i go outside with no obstructions i can get a signal 1 foot from where i tried inside the window. A weak signal even then.

So i bought this, thinking its probably a waste of cash, ill get ripped. Well to my shock, it detected all of the networks up there from inside the office. Not only that, but i can connect to 4 out of 5 of them, and one of them is extremely fast. I only use the short antenna. And if i take this antenna up to the actual rooms, even there i connect 5 times faster.

CONS: i have is the software that comes with it doesn't seem to work in vista, but the antenna works anyway with the windows driver/software. Also, sometimes i have to restart the router when i lose signal while playing certain games like World of Warcraft. Never while browsing though.

I highly recommend this product to anyone who cant quite get a signal.

Product does work well. Do have a problem with the Alfa software taking over as I tested it one laptop to use on another laptop! Now the one I tested on has problems when adapter is not connected. Contacted Dbroth re: software issue as laptop wouldn't read small cd. They got back to me within 48 hours. I have ordered another one as it did help a lot on my laptop at home. The other is being used on a Vista Laptop where the user is very happy as he was only getting 2 bars now he gets 5 and the router is 500 feet away. Used it in an area where there wasn't any coverage prior now there are full bars. For half the price of others it works great.

I've given up on this product. The installation CD's first window was a mystery on what process to select since none showed as "installation". Called toll free number. Answered eventually (after enduring endless menu) by person who clearly spoke English as a second language. 30 min. on the phone later, I just gave up,thanked the guy for his time and ended the call. At one point I wondered if my call had prompted a hidden camera joke where eventually someone would tell me a joke had been played on me and the person I was speaking with really was Not a tech support rep etc.etc. I was absolutely worn out after dealing with Linksys's customer support for new installations. I had to repeat every sentence the guy said in an effort to confirm his instructions and then steps later, he would change his mind and have me un do something he had instructed me to do previously. After 30 min. on phone I questioned what to do with an included cable that he had not mentioned. When he told me it should have been installed many steps prior, I knew it was time to stop this torture. It was truly unbelievable ! End result: I am donating this unit to a local youth home, and buying another brand highly recommended to me by my neighbor who installed a wireless network in his home without any calls to tech support or any problems.I read scathing reports about the poor installation software on various Linksys products and now I am a believer. However poor the installation CD is, live tech support is worse....worthless, in fact.If you are not tech savy, I can't recommend using this product based on my installation misadventure.

I use this antenna for a 54g router to communicate with a 54g router reconfigured as a repeater. The two units are in different houses some 700 feet apart but still line of sight. Both units have the antennas. Works great.

                By PLThumper (Fresno, CA USA)
I purchased this in July.. Installed per directions 4 times.. Updated drivers and spent countless days on the phone with customer support in Phillipines. They told me over and over how to take out and reinstall and when I did and it didn't fix the problem, they would send me up to the next level for them to tell me to do the same thing over again.

I hung up and did my own thing! I got it to work!! By disabling the entire security on my router! Thats the only way that it would work!

I contacted Microsoft thinking it was a problem on there end.... Nope! They worked with me for days.. reviewing my computer and files and determined that it was Linksys issue.

Not wanting to talk to Phillipians again... I got online and researched my model and found that I am not the only one that is having this problem. Linksys's forums are full of people having the same issue... With no real fix! Some have tweaked it to get there's to work! But most still can't get it to work.

I finally called Linksys back.. Insisting on speaking with customer service in the USA I held my ground and finally was sent to a person in Arizona! She listened to me and is seeing if she can get me help on this. She didn't seem surprised with the trouble that I was having with this pci adapter!

I wouldn't purchase it! and if you like supporting American's I wouldnt purchase Linksys anymore! I only purchase from companies that have customer service reps in the USA.

Update: Still working on this issue! 6 months later! The USA Customer help number is 877-959-7467. I still had to talk with the Phillipians to get a case number for return. THEY INFORMED ME THIS PRODUCT WAS DETERMINED TO BE DEFECTIVE and non operational! I then had to redial the above number to get to someone that could start the process for return. I'm done with Linksys! Sad, they used to be a great company with wonderful products. But I like good customer service!

We've got four computers running through our wireless Linksys SRX router. All of the computers except our desktop worked great with the router (regardless of what room you were working from.) After I installed this adapater(which was extremely easy to do)our desktop went from getting a low signal of 18-32 Mbps on our old g adapter to 108 Mbps! What a dream! As a side note, I checked the Linksys website before I bought this (since someone mentioned it wasn't supported) and they do have the driver for this adapter available for download.

                Product Description

The Linksys WRT54G Wireless-G Broadband Router is really three devices in one box. First, there's the Wireless Access Point, which lets you connect Wireless-G or Wireless-B devices to the network. There's also a built-in 4-port full-duplex 10/100 Switch to connect your wired-Ethernet devices.

Connect four PCs directly, or daisy-chain out to more hubs and switches to create as big a network as you need. Finally, the Router function ties it all together and lets your whole network share a high-speed cable or DSL Internet connection, files, and other resources such as printers and hard disk storage space.

                  Product Description

Wireless-G is the upcoming 54Mbps wireless networking standard that's almost five times faster than the widely deployed Wireless-B (802.11b) products found in homes, businesses, and public wireless hotspots around the country - but since they share the same 2.4GHz radio band, Wireless-G devices can also work with existing 11Mbps Wireless-B equipment. The Linksys Wireless-G Access Point lets you connect Wireless-G or Wireless-B devices to the network. Since both standards are built in, you can protect your investment in existing 802.11b infrastructure, and migrate your network clients to the screaming fast Wireless-G standard as your needs grow.To protect your data and privacy, the Wireless-G Access Point can encrypt all wireless transmissions. The MAC Address filter lets you decide exactly who has access to your wireless network. Configuration is a snap with the web browser-based configuration utility.Future-proof your wireless network with the Linksys Wireless-G Access Point. You'll enjoy Wireless-B connectivity today, and be prepared for a high-speed Wireless-G tomorrow.
