 "great product" 2009-09-12
By Bryan Strobel (Corona, CA USA)
I had to purchase this express card becuase my internal wireless no longer works. HP laptops are loosing a lot of points right now. 6 months ago I had the same thing happen to my other "hp" laptop and bought the belkin n1. The belkin installed easy but doesn't have a lot of range. I wanted to see if I could find a product that had a better range and gave Linksys a try. I am not disappointed at all. Belkin cost me $80. I found this product threw sec, inc. for around half the price. VERY HAPPY!!!!!

 "poor range, disconnects" 2009-07-28
By Jeff G. Brock
I bought this card because the built in Intel N adapter in my new Sony laptop is actually G (they can call it wahtever they like, but if it won't connect to any N networks, it is not N)

Anyway, in an effort to get back to N, I bought this card. Speed back up to 270Mbps. BUT, you have to be in the same room with the router to get that. 30 feet away and it drops to below G speed.

I took my laptop outside and tried the Intel and it was reporting an excellent signal and 54 Mbps. The Linksys card was reporting poor signal and 27 Mbps.

To add insult to injury, the card disconnects every few minutes.

Checked the web site and the driver there is actually older than the one that came on the installation CD. which is strange.

Not sure if the problems with this card are hardware or software. Either way, it is going back. If it is hardware, nothing is going to fix it. If I am waiting on a better driver, I might as well be waiting on a better Intel driver. That option doesn't cost me 80 dollars.

 "Poor support for product" 2009-06-07
By P. Hanna
I bought this thinking that because a big company like Cicso and Linksys was behind this that support would be great. Well, I don't have my CD (lost it) and went to the web to download the driver. None to be found! Just a product page that says drivers and no drivers.

 "Linksys WEC600N" 2009-06-04
By Laniapoko Makawao
There was no noticeable difference between this device and a device that was three years older. All in all, a big disappointment.

"There's a reason some of us don't like this card" 2009-05-18
By Robert (Beijing)
The reason I'm complaining is simple; in 3 different computers the WEC600N connects at best at 802.11(b) speeds.

In my old XP laptop, my son's Vista Home Premium 32 bit laptop and my new Vista Home premium 64 bit OS laptop, the WEC600N did not connect at draft N speeds. In fact, before I wrote this I installed it again in our newest laptop with the same poor results.

Using our Linksys Draft N router and a USB Draft N adapter I had a faster link speed on my XP laptop. Our other laptops have Draft N adapters as standard equipment. The sensitivity is also lower than the internal cards of three different aforementioned computers.

On the plus side the installation is easy. The size is conveniently compact. Here endeth the good news.

Linksys replaced my first unit under warranty, and the replacement card was no better.

"slower than my wireles G" 2009-07-28

Not sure what's all the hype about. This is actually slower than my wireless G. The fastest I got this to go was 36 mpbs. My wireless G card could go up to 108

"Works with Windows 7 RC out of the box!" 2009-06-02
By Michael Rice (Seattle, WA USA)
Great little Wireless N adapter that performs as you'd expect, i'm writing this review right now on my N connection, on average I get around 270 Mbps over my local network.

Installed right away on Windows 7 RC, just plug and play, no need to use the driver CD or search the website for a compatible driver.

Form factor isn't anything special, it's like any PCMCIA card, but at least it's not massive or intrusive, and it has a glossy finish on the underside of it, although i'm not sure why.

Lights on the top of the card clearly indicate what you'd expect, power and link/act as they're labeled.

The only reason I give this card 4 stars is that it doesn't come with any form of Linux drivers, and my Slackware distro doesn't have a generic driver that works for it like it did for my onboard wireless G or another Linksys PCMCIA card I have, also wireless G, so for the moment, I have to wait till I can find a Linux driver (or modify an existing driver) before my Linux life can come into the wireless N world. Minor annoyance for me that wont affect most people.

Works great on an old 700mhz laptop.

Only reason I gave it a 4 star is because I have yet to test it at anywhere near it's top speed rating.

Card is not very reliable. It keeps loosing the signal. Could be due to the fact that my laptop is old. I was expecting better performace regardless.

    Amazon.com Product Description

Amazon.com Product Description The Linksys Dual-Band Wireless A+G notebook adapter lets your notebook communicate with all three wireless network standards: 802.11b, 802.11a, and 802.11g. Typical 802.11b networks have a data rate of 11 Mbps, and are commonly found in corporate environments and in homes for household Internet connectivity without the need for running cables. They're also popping up all over the country in coffee shops, airports, hotels, convention s, and other public spaces offering Internet "hot spots" to mobile users.

In high-speed or heavy-usage environments, 802.11b is quickly being replaced by 802.11g, which uses the same 2.4 GHz radio band, but at 54 Mbps--almost five times faster. All wireless communications can be protected by up to 152-bit encryption, so your data stays secure.

See a comparison diagram of the different wireless technologies.

Wireless networks are rapidly becoming more popular and coming down in price. Since they don't require cables, you can use the devices anywhere in an office or home, even out on the patio. There's no need to roll out an Ethernet network cable to each room of a house; you can network anywhere--without wires. Outside the home, wireless networking is available in hotspots at coffee shops, businesses, and airports--great when you're on the road and need to get some work done. For convenience, wireless networking is the answer.

Which Wireless Standard Is Right for Me?
Now that you've decided to create a wireless network, the next step is to figure out which wireless standard to use.

Basically, a standard is a set of specifications for a device. All devices that follow a specific standard share operating characteristics, such as the radio frequency used and maximum data transfer speed.

For wireless networking, there are three standards to choose from at this time:

    • 802.11b
    • 802.11a
    • 802.11g

To learn about the differences between the standards and select the right one for your network, click here for an easy-to-understand chart.

We have one of these and, to put it mildly, it is a piece of crap. The signal is often weak even if we're only 3 feet from the wireless router. It's so annoying that we've resorted to just using a wired connection most of the time.

     "Good wireless card...1 problem" 2009-01-14
    By Artoo (Suffolk, Va. USA)
I originally ordered a WPC54G card from AONSale through Amazon. They sent me a WPC55AG Dual-Band Wireless A+G card. The card works fine, but if you use the installation disk that comes with it, it installs a Wireless Network Monitor with icon that you can use to connect to a wireless site. The only problem was when using the Wireless Network Monitor the card would connect to the site but would not connect to the internet. I uninstalled the card, unplugged it from the computer then plugged it back in and used Windows to install the card, that way the Wireless Network Monitor is not installed on the computer. I use Linksys EasyLink Advisor that was installed on the computer when I installed my WRT54G2 router to connect to wireless sites. Bottom line, its a good wireless card so far with good download speeds.

    Amazon.com Product Description

Amazon.com Product Description The next generation of wireless technology has arrived, with the Linksys WRT54GX4 Wireless-G Broadband Router with SRX400 leading the way. Although it's technically considered a router, the Linksys WRT54GX4 is much more than that. Based on "multiple in, multiple out," or MIMO, technology that effectively doubles the data rate, this is actually three high-performance devices in one. First, there's the Wireless Access Point, which lets you connect to the network, as the name suggests, without wires.

Ports and reset button on one side ... View larger.
... and network activity LEDs on the other. View larger.
The router can also be mounted to the wall. View larger.

Linksys Wireless-G Broadband Router is like three devices in one. View larger.
Then there's the built-in four-port full-duplex 10/100 Switch to connect your wired Ethernet devices together. Finally, there's the actual router that ties it all together and lets your whole network share a high-speed cable or DSL Internet connection. With the Linksys WRT54GX4, the days of stacking boxes connected by a confusion of tangled wires are thankfully over.

SRX: The Future of Wireless Networks Is Here
The Linksys WRT54GX4, like all of Linksys's SRX400 products, is based on MIMO technology, a key component in the upcoming Wireless-N standard (802.11n). By overlaying the signals of two Wireless-G compatible radios, MIMO has the capacity to double data transfer rates. In fact, the maximum wireless data transfer rates of the SRX400 actually exceed the capabilities of the traditional wired Ethernet 10/100 data ports that are in place on most computer networks. It's that fast. And by using the network's signal reflections that usually hinder performance in typical wireless products to increase range and reduce "dead spots" in the wireless network, SRX400 effectively increases the coverage area of the network by up to three times that of Wireless-G. In short, not only do you significantly increase your data transfer speed with Linksys WRT54GX4, but you can vastly increase the distance you can send our signal as well.

Of course, you don't want to transmit sensitive information without making certain the network is secure. To help protect data and privacy, the Linksys WRT54GX4 can encode all wireless transmissions with industrial-strength WPA (Wi-Fi Protected Access) encryption. It can serve as a network DHCP server, supports VPN pass-through, and has a powerful SPI (Stateful Packet Inspection) firewall to protect against intruders and most known Internet attacks. Enabling these security features on the router is easy with the Linksys Web browser-based configuration utility.

And when your computers are equipped with the Linksys WPC54GX4 Wireless-G PC Card, you will see unparalleled throughput, significantly reduced dead spots, and a dramatically increased wireless range compared to traditional Wireless-G networks.

Does this mean that you'll need to convert all of your wireless equipment to SRX400? Not by a long shot. While SRX400 works optimally with other SRX400-enabled devices, it works just fine with standard Wireless-G and -B equipment. In fact, the Linksys WRT54GX4 router has a "good neighbor" policy that ensures that it is always checking for other wireless devices in the area before gobbling up the radio band. While it can dynamically enable a double-speed mode for SRX400 devices, it's designed to seamlessly operate with other 802.11 certified wireless devices at their respective fastest available speeds. And best of all, it enhances the performance of non-SRX devices by allowing them to connect at further distances than standard Wireless-G routers do. But when both ends of the wireless link are SRX400, the router can increase the throughput even more by using twice as much radio band, yielding speeds up to 10 times as fast as standard Wireless-G.

The bottom line is that with the Linksys Wireless-G Broadband Router with SRX400 at the of your home or office network, you can share a high-speed Internet connection, files, printers, and multiplayer games at speeds faster than those of 10/100 wired networks, but without all the hassles of wires or inefficient wireless connectivity.

"Works very well when set up properly." 2009-04-09
    By B. Waggoner (Nevada)
My application is wireless-G in the suburbs with Windows XP SP2 and a cable modem upstream. Windows shows faint signals coming from 4 neighbors in addition to my strong signal. Initial setup was very easy, but my wireless link kept disappearing at random, sometimes coming back in a few minutes, other times not for several hours (unable to reconnect). I used Internet Explorer to log onto the router setup menus 4 times in as many days, changing the wireless channel number, disabling wireless-B, and disabling the "adaptive channel expansion" option. Finally I found a channel with no interference, and the router works perfectly. Having a router with increased range not only boosts your own signal, but also interferes with neighbors and leaves your own router more open to interference from neighbors. So the router works perfectly once you find a wireless channel not being used by anybody else in the neighborhood, but there's no excuse for Windows XP and/or the Linksys router not helping you find an unused channel in the first place. Interference from neighbors on the same channel no doubt causes many of the bad reviews herein and Linksys product returns, so I cannot fathom why they apparently haven't thought about this fundamental issue and come up with a good (i.e. automatic) solution.

The router did not work! Linksys tech support is awful and a waste of time! DO NOT BUY THIS PRODUCT!!!

     "Linksys WRT54GX4 Wireless-G" 2008-05-10
    By Joseph Polanco (Ohio)
Linksys products over the years have proven to be less than reliable and the WRT54GX4 may be the culmination of this dubious achievement status.

Like all Linksys products the main issues are functionality, consistency and ease of implementation. I have only thirty years experience in the IT world which perhaps under qualifies me to properly setup these units.

Avoid using these overpriced, under performing products whenever possible and you'll be much happier or disregard this review and find out why millions of people are on a first named basis with Rashis (from Bombay) one of the dozens of friendly customer support individuals sub-contracted by the company to man their very busy customer support lines 24/7. Too bad they can't ad a few more days to the week to take some of the pressure off these nice people.

"AS GOOD AS N ROUTERS OUT THERE!" 2008-03-08
By J. Reyes (Los Angeles, CA)
After trying to replace the WRT54GX with an N router to get better range, I discovered this router gives me better range than all the N routers I tried: the D-Link DIR-655, the Negear RangeMax Dual Band Wireless N router, and the Belkin N1 wireless router. Okay people, my room is VERY FAR away from the router location, and at least five walls stand in between. I get one bar from the WRT54GX, but it works. The Netgear and the Belkin routers didn't ever register a bar. The D-Link worked but dropped frequently and then locked me out. On a wireless G signal, this router appears to be as fast as the N routers. I have the SRX400 wireless card that goes with it, and when paired up with this routers, its speed is on par with any N card, N router configuration I tried. It's lighting fast. Shame on Linksys for discontinuing support for Windows Vista on adapters for this router, for giving up on its technology basically. It's awesome. I love it and in my opinion, it's the best router out there for my purpose. On a last note, it's been ultra reliable.

    Product Description

Subject to customer authorization by Linksys.

The Linksys Wireless-G Router for Mobile Broadband is really three devices in one box. First, theres the Wireless Access Point, which lets you connect both screaming fast Wireless-G (802.11g at 54Mbps) and Wireless-B (802.11b at 11Mbps) devices to the network. Second, it is a built-in 4-port full-duplex 10/100 Switch to connect your wired-Ethernet devices together. Connect four PCs directly or attach more hubs and switches to create as big a network as you need. Thirdly, the Router function ties it all together and lets your whole network share a mobile broadband Internet connection (requires a mobile broadband data card). Alternatively, you can also connect a cable or DSL modem to the Ethernet port and access the Internet via your available broadband service. Once your computers are connected to the Router and the Internet, they can communicate with each other too, sharing document files, a printer, storage space, and other resources.

We use one of these for tradeshows to connect multiple computers at the booth and can share the connection with our colleagues in other booths. When the wife and I travel, we can be on the internet on separate laptops. If a client is without internet for whatever reason, this can serve them for a short time days until they are back online.

It's easy to setup and with the firmware update never drops the connection to Sprint.

I run a public commuter bus service and we have installed about 20 of these linksys routers on our vehicles to provide free wireless web access to our customers. The Sprint cards work great with these routers, and the router can easily be set up with any browser. Recommended for anyone who needs a cell based web access solution.

        • Converts wired-Ethernet devices to Wireless-G network connectivity

        Product Description

Linksys Wireless-G Ethernet Bridge with 5-port Switch - High-speed cable-free bridging between remote workgroups! The Wireless-G Ethernet Bridge with 5-port Switch can be used as a kind of "cable-less cable" for connecting remote areas together. Maybe Shipping is all the way across the warehouse from Receiving. You can connect up to 5 Ethernet-equipped computers directly to the high-speed 10/100 switch ports on the Wireless-G Ethernet Bridge. Put another one (or a Wireless-G Access Point, or our one-port Wireless-G Ethernet Bridge) at the other end, and those 5 computers are connected to your main network -- with no need to string wires. And those 5 switch ports can support devices other than PCs. Since there are no drivers to load, you can make any wired-Ethernet device -- like a printer or network attached storage device -- into a wireless network device. All five ports are auto speed negotiating, and have automatic MDI/MDI-X crossover detection, so you don't have to worry about the cable type. To protect your data and privacy, all wireless transmissions can be secured with up to 128-bit encryption.

Rock solid workgroup switch. Need one for each room--can plug in all wired network devices, then link w/o cable to router. And then, control wireless security settings remotely from one place rather than running around to each system or having to turn systems on--makes changing SSID/PSK much faster. Faultless bridging thus far--about 2 yrs experience. ROI for this inexpensive piece is big--solid performance, easier wifi management, & scalability.

I had to to end up reselling them on ebay and lost my money

This is why this product is bad:

a)You can just use one at a time

b)Unreliable, it will just stop working

c)Why pay 100$, when it is smarter and cheaper just to by a speaker cable and run it to your stereo

        d)Overcomplicated software and configuration

"Stable and Easy to Set Up" 2006-10-27
By DJK (Los Altos, CA USA)
I have a wireless network comprised primarily of Belkin hardware. So I was concerned about compatibility issues. But multi-port ethernet bridges are not easy to find. So I took a chance with this. Setup is relatively easy if you know fundamentals about wireless networking. I agree with the other reviewers that the documentation is pretty useless. You have to disable encryption on the network prior to setting up the WET54GS5 and the documentation doesn't cover this at all. Once the initial setup is completed, enabling WEP encryption was straightforward. I didn't try WPA encrption so I can't speak to that functionality. I use the WET54GS5 to connect my Slingbox Pro, Tivo 3, and Xbox 360. It's been over 30 days and no issues whatsoever. The unit has been on since I set it up and I haven't touched it since. Range appears to be good as my wireless router is at the other end of the house and there have been no connection issues, unlike some other wireless devices I have. Best of all was the price on Amazon, $90. Anywhere else, this unit sells for between $140-$150. Overall, if you only need WEP encryption, the WET54GS5 should do the trick.

"Buy the WETG54G Bridge and switch seperately" 2006-09-26
By P. Weyzen (Lompico, CA USA)
When my WET54G bridge died on me, I thought I'd get this version of the product...

Very disappointing. This version of the product was unreliable, as compared to the bridge-only version. It was unable to keep connections, and seemed slow to initiate connections. I rebooted it frequently in order to get connections...

The WETG54 product never had a problem -- until the day it died. It served me very well.

The moral of the story -- sometimes seperate components are better than combinations. Stick to the components.

The WETG54S5 is not worth the trouble.

"If you like WEP you are in luck - with WPA - stay away!" 2006-07-16
        By Ralf Loserth (USA)
This thing is great with WEP but flaps when you enable WPA with a pre-shared secret. I purchased this in the hope of connecting my Tivo to my WLAN since it doesn't support WPA at all! It was an expensive mistake. Everytime I want to update Tivo, I have to power cycle the device. It works for a bit then drops and reconnects. I have used it with a D-Link and with a Checkpoint Safe@Office with the same results. If you use WPA, don't buy it.

The Wireless-G Notebook Adapter with RangeBooster is the simple way to add or upgrade wireless connectivity in your notebook computer. Just slide it into your notebook's PC Card slot and enjoy high-speed wireless network access while retaining true mobility.RangeBooster technology is a compatible add-on to standard Wireless-G, which increases your wireless network's range up to two times, and its throughput by up to 35%. Unlike ordinary wireless technologies that are confused by signal reflections, RangeBooster uses two smart receivers at each end to detect and decode reflected signals at distances where standard technologies give up. You'll find that "dead spots" in the wireless coverage area are reduced, too.Unlike other range-enhancing technologies, RangeBooster is fully 802.11 compliant, and a "good neighbor" to other wireless devices and technologies, using a single 2.4GHz channel as specified by the official wireless standard. And with RangeBooster you'll see a range improvement even when running a mixed network of RangeBooster and regular Wireless-G devices.Once you're connected, you can keep in touch with your e-mail, access the Internet, and share files and other resources such as printers and network storage with other computers on the network, wherever you wander. You'll be able to connect with any of the growing number of public hotspots springing up in coffee shops, airport lounges, hotels and convention s. At home, you can surf the web or use instant messaging to chat with friends while sitting out on the patio. Your wireless connection can be protected by powerful 128-bit WPA encryption. The included Setup Wizard will walk you through configuring the adapter to your network's settings, step by step.Get your notebook connected from twice as far with the Wireless-G Notebook Adapter with RangeBooster from Linksys.

I recently purchased a linksys WPC54GR network adapter frome amazon.com and installed it in my older compaq laptop computer. It was purchased to replace a linksys WPC54R adapter which I had been using because I needed better range. The installation went well because I updated the compaq's operating system to windows 2000 pro. Originally the compaq had windows 98SE and I had a terrable time installing the 54G and I did not want to go through that again. As far as it's preformance goes I'm not sure if it's giving me all that much better range as before but I think it runs much faster, so I would give it four stars.

            Sincerely, KJ

            By Mark B (NJ)
I bought the Linksys WKPC54G Wireless-G Network Kit for Notebooks on Amazon for a great price ($36.25). I must say I was very apprehensive because of all the negative reviews. I've had a Linksys BEFSR41 4 port wired router for the last 7 years and it has been as solid as a rock. Anyway, I replaced the BEFSR41 with the WRK54G, hooked up all the wired connections (3 total, including a print server) and everything worked. Internet and local network worked fine. Turnkey installation. Next, I installed the CD software for the wireless card on a 4 year old DELL laptop (Windows XP) and everything went okay. The software indicated that it was connected to the router but it said I had no Internet connection. To make a long story short, I powered the router off/on and everything (including my Internet connection) worked fine. One thing I did notice was that anytime I made a change to my wireless settings on the router or laptop (especially wireless security), I had to cycle power on the router. Hardwire connections never had a problem. All in all, this combo works great. Range is pretty good and all my kids wireless game devices have no problem connecting. Buy it if the price is right. I've used it 3 days, only time will tell...

Got them off my computer and didn't have to run wires all around the house. Cheep fits my budget. Behind the curve but didn't have to finance it. Good enough to download and can use it at opposite side of the house at 45% conectivity at fifty feet away.
